Songoftheday 4/14/19 - Brainiac, dumb-dumb, bust the scientifical approach to the course and the force is centrifugal...

"Born To Roll" - Masta Ace Incorporated
from the albums Slaughtahouse (1993) and Sittin' On Chrome (1995)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #23 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 9

Today's song of the day comes from the rap collection Masta Ace Incorported, named for their leader, who started out as just a solo act, releasing his debut album Take A Look Around in 1990. That set reached the top-40 on the R&B albums list, while first single "Music Man" reached #13 on the Rap Singles chart in Billboard magazine. The sound of that record put it nicely between the street rap records and more experimental rap like A Tribe Called Quest and Digable Planets. The follow-up, "Me & The Biz", did even better, peaking at #8 on that list as well as becoming his first to make the R&B chart in Billboard at #47.

When it came to record his next record, Masta Ace assembled a "group" and attached Incorporated to the act name. With beat DJ Lord Digga, and Paula Perry, Leschea, and Eyceurokk, who make cameos on certain tracks, Ace put out Slaughtahouse in the spring of 1993. A remix of the album track "Jeep Ass Niguh" became his biggest success. Renamed "Born To Roll", Masta Ace delves into more gangsta rap notes, with horn touches in the intro recalling his earlier work...

"Born To Roll" became Masta Ace Incorporated's first and only top-40 pop hit in May of 1994. The record also climbed to #33 on Billboard magazine's R&B chart, and was his biggest success on their Rap Singles Chart at #5. When the rappers next album, Sittin' On Chrome, arrived in 1995, it also included a remix of this track. The follow-up from that set, "The INC Ride", almost made the R&B top-40 at #44, while stopping at #69 on the Polish Singles chart. Finally, the title track "Sittin' On Chrome" went to #67 on the R&B chart and #84 on the pop Hot 100. The album itself was his most successful, stopping at #19 on the R&B-specific chart, and #69 on the streets.

After the new millenium, Masta Ace went back to being solo, and his next album, Disposable Arts, was critically heralded, and got to #90 on the R&B albums chart, but by then radio had let them be. They have relesed a few albums after, most recently in 2016 with The Falling Season.
