"Anything" - SWV
from the albums Above The Rim (Original Soundtrack) (1994) and The Remixes (1994)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #18 (three weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 15

Today's song of the day comes from the female R&B vocal trio SWV (or "Sisters With Voices"), whose debut album It's About Time had landed four big chart hits with the double-sided "Right Here (Human Nature)" and "Downtown", "I'm So Into You", and the #1 pop hit "Weak".  In 1994, Coko, Taj, and Lelee contributed a song to the soundtrack of the basketball movie Above The Rim, starring Duane Martin and rapper Tupac Shakur. The result, "Anything", written by producer Brian Alexander Gordon, ended up becoming the first track on the album and the first released single to pop radio. The midtempo jam had a groovy horn sample that I can't place but makes it a perfect cruising jam...

"Anything" became SWV's fourth top-40 pop single in the U.S. in May of 1994. The song also climbed to #4 on Billboard magazine's R&B chart as well as #5 the newly-created Adult R&B (or "urban contemporary") radio format list. Internationally, the single was a top-40 hit in the UK at #24, while being a minor success in New Zealand at #49. While the song was at its peak, the group released an EP of The Remixes with six tracks including this one, in a special version featuring rap group Wu-Tang Clan. It ended up reaching the top ten on the R&B albums chart (#9) and #92 on the main Top 200 Albums sales list.

Here's that "Old School Remix" with the Wu-Tang that certainly helped the urban radio reception of the track..

And the trio promoting the single at the time on TV...

And finally, in concert in Washington DC in 2014...

Up tomorrow: A special pop/reggae duo brings us to the Staples Singers courtesy of a Threesome.
