Songoftheday 12/15/18 - When your lips are burning mine and you take the time to tell me how you feel...

"Rain" - Madonna
from the album Erotica (1992)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #14 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 14

(Ed. Note - Hey folks, because of time constraints from work and the holidays, and starting up my yearly "twostepcubchart" countdown tomorrow, this will be the last "song of the day" until after the new year. I appreciate your patience, and still please keep coming to check out who made the list for the biggest "hits" of 2018 in my book. Thanks!)

Today's song of the day is from Madonna, whose salaciously titled fifth studio album Erotica had already spun off three hit singles in America with the title track "Erotica", the disco gem "Deeper and Deeper", and the somber "Bad Girl" (as well as a #1 dance hit with a cover of "Fever"). The fourth and final single in the U.S. would be the lush ballad "Rain". Written and produced by Madonna with Shep Pettibone, the track would be a 180 from "Erotica" in terms of naughtiness, but in the end turns out one of her best vocal performances, while the music video directed by Mark Romanek places her in a meta-fictional video with Japanese jazz-soul master Ryuichi Sakamoto playing the director on various sets...

"Rain" became the fourth top-40 pop hit from Erotica in America in September of 1993. The song also climbed to #7 on Billboard magazine's Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") radio chart. Internationally, the single spent two weeks at #2 in Canada, and reached the top ten in Australia (#5), Finland (#5), the UK (#7), Ireland (#7), and Italy (#9). It also made the top 40 in Switzerland (#11), Sweden (#16), New Zealand (#20), Austria (#24), Belgium (#25), Iceland (#25), Germany (#26), and the Netherlands (#38).

A fifth single from the record, "Bye Bye Baby", was scatteredly issued overseas, though it hit the top ten in Italy at #7, and made the top-40 in Australia (#15) and Switzerland (#28).

And here's Madonna performing "Rain" in her Girlie Show concert, with backup singers Niki Haris and Donna Delory really upping the harmony game here...

As I said, stay tuned for the countdown, and I'll return with a new SOTD in January! Cheers!
