Songoftheday 12/6/18 - Lately I've been thinking that you don't feel the same, I don't know what it is all I know is that you changed...
"Something's Goin' On" - U.N.V.
from the album Something's Goin' On (1993)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #29 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 7
Today's song of the day comes from R&B vocal group U.N.V., who came together in Detroit in the early 1990s. They released their debut single, "Something's Goin' On", independently, and had regional success before being picked up by Madonna's vanity label Maverick. Written by members John Clay, Demetrius Peete, and John Powe, the slow jam became their biggest hit...
"Something's Goin' On" became UNV's first and only top-40 pop hit in July of 1993. The song spent three weeks at #3 on Billboard magazine's R&B chart, lasting over eight months on the list. Their follow-up ballad "Straight From My Heart" climbed into the R&B top-40 at #36, but missed the pop chart altogether. Third release "Close Tonight" was a minor R&B hit at #87. Despite having only the one big hit, their album of the same name reached the R&B albums top ten at #7.
The group returned in 1995 with their second effort Universal Nubian Voices, named for their group. It reached #39 on the R&B albums chart, while lead single "So In Love With You" scaled to #65 on the pop Hot 100 in American and #49 on the R&B list, but in New Zealand the song was a left-field success, peaking at #3. The act wouldn't last much longer than that, though they reunited in 2008 for the remake album Timeless, and this past year John Powe assembled a new lineup of UNV for the sweet harmonic single "Running".
