"Run To You" - Whitney Houston
from the album The Bodyguard (Original Soundtrack) (1992)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #31 (five weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 6

Today's song of the day comes from Whitney Houston, whose star turn in the movie The Bodyguard had also graced her with three huge pop hits with "I Have Nothing", "I'm Every Woman", and her massively popular cover of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You". The fourth and final physical single released in America from the album (well, fourth of Whitney's singles) was yet another ballad that showed off her vocal chops. "Run To You", written by Jud Friedman and Allan Rich and produced by David Foster, wasn't as showy as the other two power ballads before it, and yes, it sounds like it could've been recorded in 1982, but still had a presence fitting a diva with such a following that she would need a bodyguard...

"Run To You" became the fifth top-40 hit from The Bodyguard (including the S.O.U.L. System's "It's Gonna Be A Lovely Day") in July of 1993. The song also climbed to #9 on Billboard magazine's Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") radio chart, while it peaked at #31 on their R&B genre list. Internationally, the single reached the top ten in Portugal (#7), Ireland (#9), and Canada (#10), and made the top-20 in the UK (#15) and Belgium (#19). At the Academy Awards in March of 1993, "Run To You" was nominated for an Oscar for Best Song along side her other original Bodyguard cut, "I Have Nothing", but both were shut out by Aladdin's "A Whole New World" (which also was competing against it's soundtrack-mate "Friend Like Me").
