Songoftheday 12/9/18 - Do you see what I see, a rainbow shining over us in the middle of a hopeless storm...

"I'm Free" - Jon Secada
from the album Jon Secada (1992)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #27 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 8

Today's song of the day comes from Latin-pop singer/songwriter Jon Secada, who stepped out into the spotlight from being Gloria Estefan's backup singer to his self-titled debut album, which had already spun off three big pop hits with "Angel", "Do You Believe In Us", and the top five "Just Another Day". The fourth single released in America was the midtempo adult-pop of "I'm Free". Written by Secada with Miguel Morejon, the uplifting nature of the chorus anchors the inspirational track which set's Secada's multi-track harmonies to good use which offsets the oft-covered theme of pulling yourself out of your funk in the bad times in the verses...

"I'm Free" became the fourth and final top-40 pop hit in America from Jon's debut album in July of 1993. The song also climbed to #4 on Billboard magazine's Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") radio chart. Internationally, the single went to #3 in Canada, while in the UK, where it was released as the fifth single, stopped halfway up the list at #50. There, the house music track "Do You Really Want Me" was released as the time "I'm Free" came out in the States, and made it to #30 on the British singles chart. Lastly, the song "One Of A Kind" was a minor hit in Germany at #60. (Both of these non-American hits were on par with the quality of those big here, and are worth checking out. )
