Songoftheday 8/28/18 - When you know the notes to sing you can sing most anything, that's what my mama told me...
"Deeper and Deeper" - Madonna
from the album Erotica (1992)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #7 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 13
Today's song of the day comes from newly-christened sexagenarian Madonna, who had taken her risque single "Erotica" into the top three on the American pop chart mostly through sheer force of her fame (and talent) in the fall of 1992. As experimental and lascivious as that track was, the follow-up was just as accessible and straightforward. "Deeper and Deeper", written by the same team that did "Erotica" (Madonna, producer/remixer Shep Pettibone, and Andy Shimkin) was a by the books house music throwdown, with a sing-along melody with an undeniable hook in its chorus. The song even lifts a couple lines from her other house classic, "Vogue". With a video that presumably continues the plot from the previous single, with German actor Udo Kier making a repeat appearance, the clip otherwise seemed like a clip of one of her personal parties, with buddy Debi Mazar and manager Guy Oseary showing alongside gay porno actor Joey Stefano and Sire Records head Seymour Stein...
"Deeper and Deeper" became Madonna's second top ten pop hit from Erotica in January of 1993. The remixes done by Pettibone and David Morales helped it spend a week at #1 on Billboard's Dance Club Play chart. Internationally, the single took two weeks at #2 in Canada, and peaked at#5 in Finland, #6 in the UK, #7 in Ireland, #8 in Italy, #8 in Denmark, #9 in New Zealand, and #10 in Belgium. It also reached the top-40 in Australia (#11), France (#17), the Netherlands (#20), Sweden (#22), Switzerland (#23), Germany (#26), and Austria (#30).

Here's the deep house remix treatment done by David Morales that topped the dance chart...
Madonna first included the song live in her Girlie Show concert behind the Erotica album in 1993..
Over a decade later, she slowed the tempo down for the song on her Re-Invention concerts...
And here's the "Classic 12'" remix done by the song's co-writer and producer, Shep Pettibone...
And finally, Madge brought the house music back to the track for her Rebel Heart shows in 2015...
Up tomorrow: Irish rockers are looking for cowboys, perhaps?
