Songoftheday 8/10/18 - In the beginning God made the sea, but on the seventh day he made me...

"My Name Is Prince" - Prince and the New Power Generation
from the album Love Symbol Album (1992)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #36 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 1

Today's song of the day comes from music legend Prince, who had formed a new backing band, the New Power Generation, for his 1991 album Diamonds & Pearls, and scored four top-40 pop hits from it with "Gett Off", "Money Don't Matter 2 Night", "Diamonds & Pearls", and the #1 jam "Cream". In the summer of 1992, the artist who would become "The Artist" released a single that would preview his upcoming fourteenth studio album, Love Symbol Album. "Sexy MF", a lascivious groove record that mirrored his intentions in "Gett Off", was only a minor hit in America, reaching #66 on the pop chart and #76 on Billboard's R&B tally. But overseas it was a much bigger success, making the top 10 in the UK (#4), the Netherlands (#4), Australia (#5), Norway (#5), Austria (#6), New Zealand (#6), Switzerland (#8), and Belgium (#10). The second release from the record was Prince's own choice, another non-traditional floor-filler with "My Name Is Prince". Written and produced by the Purple One, it forecasted his fights with his record company, and subsequent use of that symbol merging male and female that he took on for quite a while. The music video was another epic story vehicle with Kirstie Alley from Cheers doing news reporting...

"My Name Is Prince" spent a week in the American pop Top-40 in October of 1992. The song climbed to #25 on Billboard's R&B chart, while the remixes of the track helped him climb to #9 on their Dance Club Play chart (so far his final hit of that list). Internationally, the song was a huge success, reaching the top ten in Ireland (#5), the UK (#7), New Zealand (#7), Austria (#7), the Netherlands (#8), and Australia (#9). It also made the top-40 in Belgium (#11), Switzerland (#14), Sweden (#15), Germany (#19), and France (#29), while in Canada it sputtered out at #80.
