Brit Sweep: June 3rd, 2012...

Since London is all a party celebrating the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, I figured it's a good time to kick off another weekly feature, sampling the new tunes on the British single charts this week. I've been a musical Anglophile since the 80s, and used to religiously buy the Now That's What I Call Music compilations back when they featured acts like the Smiths, OMD, and Blancmange. Especially for us stateside, its a good way to get a glimpse of new music from across the pond.

The new #1 single in Great Britain this week is by East London's Rudimental, with their first charting single featuring singer John Newman. Notice this hardcore dance stuff would never go #1 in the States (at least yet) and that's been the case since the rave times of the 90s. Here's "Feel The Love"...

Back in April I featured Sweden's upcoming entry to the Eurovision song contest, Loreen's "Euphoria". Well, what do you know, it won the whole thing, and now comes on to the UK chart at #3..

Newcomers Lawson pop in right under at #4 with the Wanted-ish rock-boyband mash of "When She Was Mine"...

Speaking of boybands, none was bigger in England than Take That, and lead singer Gary Barlow has taken a side trip to make a commemorative EP for the Diamond Jubilee, which enters the album charts at #1. The title single comes in at #11, in versions sung by both Barlow and by groups of singers and musicians from around the world, including the Military Wives who had the Xmas #1 single last year. It's "Sing"...

Swedish DJ Sebastian Ingrosso enters at #19 with his global dance hit "Calling (Lose My Mind)" featuring OneRepublic lead singer/songwriter Ryan Tedder...

Former X Factor winner Alexandra Burke comes in at #33 with her latest, the dance-club single "Let It Go"..

Justin Bieber previews his upcoming album with a second track (after "Boyfriend") that samples Michael Jackson's "We Got A Good Thing Going" in the back, " Die In Your Arms" at #34...

and at #35 is rapper Wretch 32, with Brit Award-winning singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran on backup on "Hush Little Baby"...

and here's some notable debuts under the top-40...

Cyprus' entry to Eurovision, Ivi Adamou, comes in at #77 with "La La Love"...

DJ Tiesto teams up with Wolfgang Gartner at #87 with "We Own The Night"...

Alt-folk rockers Stealing Sheep appear at #95 with "Shut Eye"..

Cheers!
