Songoftheday June 2, 2012 - Those were good times we had, sharing the joy you thought would last...

Patrice Rushen - "Forget Me Nots"
from the album Straight From The Heart (1982)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #23 (three weeks)
weeks in the top-40: 7

Today's Song of the Day is by jazz-funk queen Patrice Rushen. "Forget Me Nots" was from her seventh studio album, and broke her through on pop radio after having a top-5 R&B hit in 1980 with "Haven't You Heard". She has been the musical director of many shows, including the Grammys and the Emmys, and she's backed up many prominent jazz musicians in her career. "Forget Me Nots" is a smooth slice of post-disco sugar that has her sending the flowers...

"Forget Me Nots" would be Patrice's only top-40 pop hit, though she would go and have a #2 Soul hit with "Feels So Real (Won't Let Go)" in 1984.

The song was first resurrected in 1991 by UK dance act Tongue N Cheek for a top-40 hit there...

In 1996, and German dance act La Bouche put their spin on the song...

While that same year, George Michael most famously extrapolated the song for the base of his top-10 hit "Fastlove"..

A year later, Will Smith cribbed the tune for his first "Men In Black" title song...

and in 2006 Lee Ritenour did a world music-styled version with Rushen assisting..

and finally Vinylshakerz updated the track for 2007...
