Brit Sweep: August 5, 2012...
Hey folks, it's time for this weeks Brit Sweep, with a look at the new music selling in the UK this week.
This week's #1 song is a debut by London "grime" rapper Wiley, who was one of the founders of the premier groups of the genre, Roll Deep. (Grime is a combo of house-like dance music and fast-delivered rap.) On his own he's scored two top-10 hits before this, including hitting #2 with "Wearing My Rolex" in 2008. He's back with Ms D with the summer-themed "Heatwave"...
At #2 is Scottish DJ/producer Calvin Harris, who must be used to this position, since it's his fourth single in a row as a lead artist to peak (so far) at the runner-up spot (like his last one, "Let's Go"). Calvin gets an assist by rapper/singer Example on his new one, "We'll Be Coming Back"...
Dubstep outfit Drumsound & Bassline Smith were last in the top 40 this year with their interpretation of the Utah Saints "What Can You Do For Me". They return at #34 with "Through The Night", featuring singer Tom Cane...
A couple more tracks come in from the opening ceremony from this years Olympics in London. First, Scottish singer (and fave of mine) Emeli Sande had by far the highlight of the night that NBC criminally cut out of the broadcast, with her emotional "Abide By Me" accompanying a tribute to the victims of the 7/7 bombing in London. She's here at #44, and here's her studio version, which is stunning...
Also from that night is the London Symphony Orchestra's interpretation of Vangelis' classic "Chariots Of Fire", which they were joined on stage by Rowan Atkinson at "Mr. Bean", at #52...
Coming off her recent #1 single "Call My Name", Cheryl Cole enters at #57 with "Under The Sun"...
Arriving at #61 is former Oasis brother Noel Gallagher's Flying Birds, with the fifth single from their debut self-titled album, "Everybody's On The Run"...
Northern Irish DJ and composer David Holmes charts another song heard at the Olympics at #81, "I Heard Wonders"...
Deceptively sneaking in at #86 is the followup the American rockers fun's #1 hit in the UK, "We Are Young", the very Queen-esque "Some Nights"...
English singer/songwriter Jessie Ware has her second chart hit with "Wildest Moments" at #92...
Finally, New York rapper ASAP Rocky comes in at #98 with "Goldie"....(NSFW)
That's a wrap, my love mostly goes on to Emeli Sande, Noel Gallagher, and fun this time out. Cheers!
