6 of the 60s: 8/8/12...

It's time for another installment of "6 of the 60s", with a half-dozen of golden nuggets from the decade that defined rock music. This time out its six songs from 1962...by the way I included links to buy the music over on Amazon if any of them strike your fancy...

Freddy Cannon - "Palisades Park
from the album Palisades Park (1962)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #3

Massachussetts-born teen idol Cannon sings the praises of the New Jersey landmark amusement park that closed in 1971, written by Chuck Barris, the guy responsible for The Gong Show.

Claudine Clark - "Party Lights"
from the album Party Lights (1962)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #5

Philly singer/songwriter scores herself a one-hit-wonder with this track that takes a note from the girl groups of the time.

Joannie Sommers - "Johnny Get Angry"
from the album Johnny Get Angry (1962)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #7

Singer/actress has a surprisingly "dark" hit for 1962, with a seeming wish for a abusive boyfriend (I don't believe that "lecture" word one bit)...

Patsy Cline - "She's Got You"
from the album Sentimentally Yours (1962)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #14

Everybody knows "Crazy" and "I Fall To Pieces", but this mournful song of love lost remains my favorite or Cline's.

Stan Getz/Charlie Byrd Sextet - "Desafinado"
from the album Jazz Samba (1962)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #15

Jazz saxophone great along with the legendary guitarist Byrd go way south for the coolest of Brazilian breezes.

Arthur Alexander - "You Better Move On"
from the album You Better Move On (1962)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #24

Ray Charles wasn't the only master of the country/soul fusion - both the Beatles and the Stones knew "Alexander the Great"'s power, with this song being covered by Jagger and the boys in 1964.

That's it for now, stay tuned tonight for "Aussie Sweep", the latest music down under, and then tomorrow I'll bring you 7 from the 70s and 8 from the 80s. Be well!
