Songoftheday 8/9/12 - Make me feel you still love me, if it's just for one more day....

Juice Newton - "Break It To Me Gently"
from the album Quiet Lies (1982)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #11 (three weeks)
Weeks in the top-40: 10

Today's Song of the Day is the Grammy-winning cover by country/pop singer Juice Newton. As a followup to her first single off of her 1982 release Quiet Lies, "Love's Been A Little Bit Hard On Me", Newton covered a song first made famous by "Little Miss Dynamite", Brenda Lee, "Break It To Me Gently"...

Juice's version brought her to #2 on the country chart (her second highest at the time after "The Sweetest Thing (I've Ever Known)", and also became her third charttopper on the adult-contemporary (soft-rock) chart. But the song missed the pop top-10 after four straight winners, though it stayed right under at #11 for three weeks. It also won Newton her first Grammy for Best Female Country Performance the following year.

The original of the song, written by blues musician and actor Joe Seneca, became the eighth top-10 hit for Brenda Lee, the legend of the country/pop/rock hybrid, in 1962...

Many high-profile singers have also tackled the song, including Rat Packer Dean Martin...

...and country cougar Lorrie Morgan..

..and to top it all off, here's a nine-year-old Christina Aguilera burnin' up the song...

Up tomorrow: The wife of a Journey-man scores a top-40 hit.
