Songoftheday 11/10/20 - Lookin' at my Rollie it's about that time, for SWV to drop a gem on mine...

"Someone" - SWV featuring Puff Daddy
from the album Release Some Tension (1997)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #19 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 10

Today's song of the day comes from the female R&B vocal trio SWV (Sisters With Voices), who scored a pair of top-40 pop hits from their sophomore album New Beginning with "Use My Heart" and the top five hit "You're The One".  At the start of 1997, Coko, Taj, and Lalee contributed a song to the soundtrack to the movie Booty Call. The result, "Can We" with rapper Missy Elliott, which also would appear on their third set Release Some Tension, reached the R&B top-40 at #31, but stalled out at #75 on Billboard magazine's pop Hot 100 list. That summer, they returned with the proper "lead single" "Someone". Written by future hitmaker Kelly Price along with Harve Pierre, Jeremy Graham, and Puff Daddy, who produced the track and appears in a rap cameo, the midtempo jam returns the group to mainstream radio's favor, with the women wondering if you could fit their romantic bill...

"Someone" became SWV's seventh top-40 pop hit in August of 1997. The single rose to #5 on Billboard's R&B chart as well. Internationally, the single reached the top-40 in Canada (#28), New Zealand (#28), and the UK (#34). The Release Some Tension album peaked at #24 on the Billboard 200 sales chart (and #5 on the R&B-specific list).
