"Do You Like This" - Rome
from the album Rome (1997)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #31 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 8
Today's song of the day comes from R&B singer Rome (aka Jerome Woods), who landed a top ten pop and R&B hit on his first try with "I Belong To You (Every Time I See Your Face)" in the summer of 1997. The second single off his self-titled debut album was the sensual breakup track "Do You Like This". Written by Woods with producer Gerard Baillergeau, the song has Rome telling his girl that he knows he's losing her, but he won't lose sleep, since he knows he's better at, well, you know, than any other man can be, and she'll be back for more, but it will be too late. It was an usual decision to place lost love lyrics over a booty call production, but someone it worked...
"Do You Like This" became Rome's second, and final, pop hit in August of 1997. The single scored his second top ten on Billboard magazine's R&B chart, peaking at #10. A third single from the set, the midtempo "Crazy Love", stiffed both at R&B and pop, missing both charts (it didn't deserve that bad a fate). After Rome's record company passed on his attempt at a second album with them, he's only reached the R&B chart once more as a featured singer on Danesha Starr's single "As Long As I Live", which peaked at #49 in 1998. After that, he went indie, and since has released three album, the most recent full-length release being Do It in 2003. And just this month, he's released a new single, "Save It", that's worth a listen.
