Songoftheday 11/17/20 - I don't have to think about I never been loved, well I only dreamed about I wondered what it was...

from the album Dru Hill (1996)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #7 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 12

Today's song of the day comes from the R&B vocal group Dru Hill, who already had scored two big hits off of their self-titled debut album with "Tell Me" and "In My Bed", with the latter reaching the pop top ten in the spring of 1997. The third single from the record would be the downtempo "Never Make A Promise". Written and produced by Daryl Simmons, the song reassures the singer's (in this case member "Jazz" Anthony) love that they will be there for them. The music video, though, boldly shared a different tale...

"Never Make A Promise" became Dru Hill's third top-40 pop hit, and second to reach the top ten, in August of 1997. The single was the group's biggest R&B hit, spending a month at #1 on Billboard's genre list. A fourth track from the Dru Hill album, "5 Steps", wasn't released as a single in the U.S., but got enough urban radio love to peak at #7 on Billboard magazine's R&B Airplay chart.
