Songoftheday 9/3/18 - What's the problem? You keep comin' in and keep comin' out and singin flat...

"Give It Up, Turn It Loose" - En Vogue
from the album Funky Divas (1992)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #15 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 12

Today's song of the day comes from the soul vocal group En Vogue, whose 1992 album Funky Divas had already spun off a trio of top ten pop hits with "My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)", "Giving Him Something He Can Feel", and "Free Your Mind". The fourth release from the record would be the funky mid-tempo jam "Give It Up, Turn It Loose". Although similar in title to the hit song from James Brown, this track written by producers Denzil Foster and Thomas McElroy was a different beast altogether, spotlighting member Maxine Jones...

"Give It Up, Turn It Loose" became the fourth big pop hit from Funky Divas, reaching the top 20 on the American pop chart in January of 1993. The song also climbed to #16 on Billboard's R&B chart. Internationally, the single made the top-40 in the UK (#22), Ireland (#30), New Zealand (#34), Canada (#36), and Switerland (#36). In 1994, "Give It Up, Turn It Loose" was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best R&B Group/Duo Performance, losing out to Sade's "No Ordinary Love".
