Songoftheday 9/4/18 - I wanna spank ya I wanna thank ya, you're the reason why I sing this song...
"I Got A Thang 4 Ya" - Lo-Key?
from the album Where Dey At? (1992)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #27 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 9
Today's song of the day comes from the R&B group Lo-Key?, who started out in Minneapolis. Keyboard player Lance Alexander and singer Tony Tolbert worked with star producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis in their Flyte Tyme studios, which led to their band being signed to the duo's label, Perspective Records. They released their debut album, Where Dey At?, in 1992, and the first single, "I Got A Thang 4 Ya", written by Tolbert and Alexander, brought them immediately to the top of the urban charts...
"I Got A Thang 4 Ya" became Lo-Key?'s first and by far biggest hit, reaching the top-40 in February of 1993. The song spent a week at #1 on Billboard's R&B chart as well, spending over eight months on that list. Their follow-up single, "Sweet On U", a smooth new jack swing track, made it to #13 on the R&B chart, while slipping to #91 on the pop Hot 100. The third and final release from the record, the ballad "Hey There Pretty Lady", was able to stop at #56 on the R&B tally only.
The following year, the band returned with their sophomore effort, Back 2 Da House. The lead single, the freak jam of "Tasty", stalled out at #50 on the R&B chart, followed by "Good Old Fashion Love", which peaked at #54. They split as a band shortly after, with Alexander and Tolbert continuing to write and produce together, namely R&B group Next's debut top-20 pop hit "Butta Love". Most recently Tolbert reunited with the rest of the band save Alexander to get the act back together, and new music is supposedly in the works.
