Songoftheday 9/1/18 - With an intellect and a savior-faire, no one in the whole universe will ever compare...
"7" - Prince and the New Power Generation
from the album Love Symbol Album (1992)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #7 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 19
Today's song of the day comes from Prince, who had aggressively asserted his presence in the pop music field with the first single from his Love Symbol Album set, "My Name Is Prince", which hit the American pop top 40 in the fall of 1992. Not too long after that burner song peaked, a more radio-friendly second single was released. "7", written and produced by Prince, was adorned with a lot of Middle Eastern instrumentation, and a mid-tempo almost march-like beat. Future wife Mayte belly-dances her way through the video...
"7" returned Prince to the pop top ten in February of 1993. On Billboard's R&B chart, which focused on urban record stores and soul radio stations, the song struggled, peaking at #61; another single from the Love Symbol Album, the slow groove of "Damn U", was released the same week as "7" and promoted to that format, and did a bit better, reaching #32 on the R&B list. Internationally, "7" made the top-40 in Canada (#12), New Zealand (#12), Australia (#25), the UK (#27), Switzerland (#28), Belgium (#32), and the Netherlands (#34). The fifth single released from the album in America was the ballad "The Morning Papers", which just missed the pop top-40 in at #44, but did reach the top-40 in the Switzerland (#31) and the Netherlands (#39).
