Songoftheday 9/27/18 - You're just a fool, you say I'm number one and you'll always be true...
"That's What Love Can Do" - Boy Krazy
from the album Boy Krazy (1993)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #18 (three weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 16
Today's song of the day comes from the female vocal group Boy Krazy, who were put together in New York City in the early 1990s. Kimberly Blake, Johnna Lee Cummings, Josselyne Jones, RuthAnn Roberts, and Renée Veneziale recorded their self-titled debut (and only) album, which was completely written and produced by the British production team of Stock Aitken Waterman, the guys behind Rick Astley, Kylie Minogue, Donna Summer's Another Place & Time album, and more. The first single from the set, "That's What Love Can Do", originally stiffed in the UK, after which Veneziale took off. A second single, "All You Have To Do", didn't do any better, also missing the chart in Britain. But during that time, select radio stations in the U.S. started to play "That's What Love Can Do", and soon enough the song was remixed and served up again, and became a sizeable hit in the States. It was one of Stock-Aitken-Waterman's best compositions, combining bright, shiny harmonies and sing-along choruses hiding actual bittersweet lyrics about breaking up with someone...
"That's What Love Can Do" became Boy Krazy's first and biggest pop hit in America, climbing into the top 20 in February of 1993. The song also climbed to #19 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") radio format chart. Internationally, the single rose to #6 in Canada, made it to #29 in the Netherlands, and only was a minor hit in Germany (#54) and again missed the chart in the UK. Their follow-up single, "Good Times With Bad Boys", stopped at #59 in the U.S., but again did much better in Canada, spending two weeks at #32. After Johnna left for a solo career, they didn't last long after that, as did Stock-Aitken-Waterman themselves, splitting apart at the end of the year. Signing with Waterman's PWL label, Johnna released a single album, Pride, in 1996, with three singles hitting the British charts, and "Do What You Feel" nearly making the UK Top-40 at #43. Meanwhile, Ruth Ann became a pro wrestling host for the WWE.

In 1999, Waterman assembled a different trio of female singers to remake the song under the moniker Toutes Les Filles; their version of "That's What Love Can Do" finally broke on to the British singles charts, stopping just under the top-40 at #44...
Before Boy Krazy recorded the song, it was originally going to be on Samantha Fox's Just One Night album but never made it past the demo stage. Here's a remix of the parts done by Matt Pop...
Lastly, here's the group appearing on Friday Night Videos, and singing "That's What Love Can Do" acappella...
