Disco Dessert: "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now" from McFadden & Whitehead...
Like yesterday's Disco Dessert act Bell & James, Gene McFadden and John Whitehead were a songwriting team for the label Philadelphia International. They penned huge pop and soul hits like the O'Jays' "Back Stabbers" and Howard Melvin & The Blue Notes' "Bad Luck", which led to their own record deal. McFadden & Whitehead's debut single, "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now", from their self-titled debut album in 1979, was a flawless slice of disco that proved how important a bassline is to a record. The song topped Billboard's R&B chart for a week, and peaked at #10 on their Disco/Dance Singles chart, while making it to #13 on their pop chart. It would be their only song to hit the pop Hot 100, though they climbed to #23 on the R&B tally with the title track from their second album, "I Heard It In A Love Song". Sadly, both died tragically; Whitehead was murdered in 2004 in a case still unsolved, while McFadden passed from cancer two years later.
