Songoftheday 4/24/18 - I remember how it used to be, you never was this nice you can't fool me...
"My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)" - En Vogue
from the album Funky Divas (1992)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #2 (three weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 22
Today's song of the day comes from female soul vocal group En Vogue, whose debut album Born To Sing had landed them two big hits with the #2 single "Hold On" and top-40 follow-up "Lies". The third single from the record, "You Don't Have To Worry", followed the others to the top of Billboard's R&B chart, but stalled down at #57 on the pop Hot 100. A fourth release, "Don't Go", missed the pop chart but did go to #3 R&B. After releasing a remix album (a trend in the late 80s/early 90s), the quartet of Maxine Jones, Cindy Herron, Terry Ellis, and Dawn Robinson recorded their sophomore effort Funky Divas. The first single from the record would be the ultra-sassy jam "My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)". Written by their producers Denzil Foster and Thomas McElroy, with a prominent sample of James Brown's "The Payback" as a percussive base, the track brought their even more mainstream success, and eventually a drag queen lipsynch anthem...
"My Lovin'" became En Vogue's second single to reach the runner-up spot on the American pop chart in May of 1992. The song also was their fourth to top Billboard's R&B chart, spending two weeks there, while the remixes on the 12" single helped the track climb to #8 on their Dance Club Play chart. Internationally, the single reached the top ten in the UK (#4), Ireland (#9), and the Netherlands (#10). It also made the top-40 in New Zealand (#11), Austria (#13), Switzerland (#16), Belgium (#17), Sweden (#19), Germany (#23), France (#34), and Australia (#36). The Funky Divas album earned them a second Grammy nomination for R&B Duo/Group Vocal Performance (which like the previous year's loss went to Boyz II Men). The music video for "My Lovin'" did won and MTV Music Video Award for best choreography.
