"Pride (In The Name Of Love)"/"A Deeper Love" - Clivillés + Cole
from the album Greatest Remixes Vol. 1 (1992)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #55 ("Pride") / #44 ("A Deeper Love")
This week's "robbed hit" is actually a two-fer, done by two of the hottest remixers in the pop music field in the 80s and 90s, Rob Clivillés and David Cole. The pair tasted their own mainstream fame when they formed the C+C Music Factory, who scored three top ten pop hits in 1990 including the #1 classic club jam "Gonna Make You Sweat". At the end of the following year Rob and David released a one-off single including remixes of two songs; the first was a cover of U2's anthem "Pride (In The Name Of Love)", sung by guitarist Paul Pesco (who played on their Music Factory album and had a long stint with Daryl Hall) and Deborah Cooper...
Meanwhile, the "B-side" would be an original, "A Deeper Love", a house music throwdown that showcased Cooper's pipes to the best effect...
When released promoting "Pride" as the radio cut, the single climbed to #54 on Billboard's pop Hot 100 in February of 1992. However, once club play of "A Deeper Love" caused fans to prefer that cut, it reversed track to climb back up to almost reaching the top-40 in March. As a combined listing, the single made it to #83 on Billboard's R&B chart. On their Dance Club Play tally, where the two songs charted separately, "Pride" climbed to #6 while "A Deeper Love" made it all the way to #1 for a week. Internationally, the single went to #15 in the UK, while "Pride" reached the top-40 in Australia (#12), New Zealand (#15), and Switzerland (#27). Meanwhile, "A Deeper Love" peaked at #6 in the Netherlands, and made the top-40 in Belgium (#22) and Germany (#35).

After the success of "A Deeper Love", the Queen Of Soul, Aretha Franklin, asked Clivilles & Cole to produce her own version of "A Deeper Love" for the Whoopi Goldberg movie Sister Act 2: Back In The Habit, which again topped the American dance chart, and got to #30 R&B and #63 pop...
And finally, here's the over-12-minute anthem version of "A Deeper Love" that dominated the clubs in 1992..
