"Again Tonight" - John Mellencamp
from the album Whenever We Wanted (1991)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #36 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 4
Today's song of the day comes from American Heartland rocker John Mellencamp, who started the 1990s with his first post-Cougar top-40 pop hit "Get A Leg Up" in the fall of 1991. That was followed by "Love And Happiness", which missed the pop chart but climbed to #5 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock radio chart and even sported a dance remix. The third single from the record would be the midtempo track "Again Tonight", written and produced by the singer/songwriter, returned him to pop radio with its addictive crunching guitar hook...
"Again Tonight" made the American pop top-40 in March of 1992. The single spent two weeks at #1 on Billboard's Maintream Rock chart (his sixth charttopper there) and crossed over to #46 on their Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") format tally. Internationally, the record was a big hit in Canada, peaking at #8, and also reached the top-40 in Australia at #39. A fourth single, "Now More Than Ever", spent a week at #3 on the Mainstream Rock list, followed by "Last Chance", which topped out at #12, but neither hit the pop Hot 100 in the U.S.
