Songoftheday 4/4/18 - Quit actin brand new I know ya fruity, 'cause when ya walkin ya shakin that booty...
"Oochie Coochie" - MC Brains
from the album Lovers Lane (1992)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #21 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 10
Today's song of the day comes from James Davis, aka Cleveland rapper MC Brains, who was discovered by New Edition/Bell Biv Devoe member Michael Bivins, who helped him get signed to Motown, where he recorded his debut album Lovers Lane. The first single from the record was the silly novelty number "Oochie Coochie", which had inane lyrics but still had the BBD new jack beat swinging underneath. Female rapper Tam Rock featured prominently on the single...
"Oochie Coochie" became Brains' sole top-40 pop hit in March of 1992. The single also climbed to #16 on Billboard's R&B chart, and topped their Rap Singles chart for two weeks. Internationally it peaked at #18 in the Netherlands, hit #35 in neighboring Belgium, and just missed the top-40 in New Zealand at #45.
MC Brains' second single was a much more classier affair, with Boyz II Men lending their vocals for the rap ballad "Brainstorming". Although it was a much better listen, the single stalled down at #69 on the pop chart, but it did climb to #29 on the R&B tally and #19 Rap Singles. A third release from the debut, "Everybody's Talking About MC Brains", popped on to the Rap Singles list at #23.
Leaving Motown, Brains released an independent album Brainwashed in 1996.
