Robbed hit of the week 4/23/18 - The Williams Brothers' "Can't Cry Hard Enough"...
"Can't Cry Hard Enough" - The Williams Brothers
from the album The Williams Brothers (1991)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #42
This week's "robbed hit" comes from the Williams Brothers, two twins from the Las Vegas suburbs who were nephews of crooning pop legend Andy Williams. Originally performing as Andy and David Williams, the pair appeared on the Partridge Family TV show, and with that exposure recorded a pair of albums. They even popped on to the American pop chart with a cover of Don & Juan's top ten hit "What's Your Name" that they took to #92 in 1973. Reviving their musical career in the late 1980s as the Williams Brothers, they released their first album as such, Two Stories, in 1987. Their self-titled second disc two years later would give them their biggest success with the adult-pop single "Can't Cry Hard Enough". Written by Andy with former Lone Justice member Marvin Etzioni, and produced by Tracy Chapman's go-to David Kershenbaum, it brought them to an audience that would have never guessed their beginnings...
While "Can't Cry Hard Enough" climbed all the way to #11 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") radio chart, spending 21 weeks on that list, the single stalled two notches below the American top-40 pop tally in April of 1992. Up in Canada, the song also stopped at #42 as well. They would issue one more album, Harmony Hotel, in 1993.
