Songoftheday 7/12/13 - I can see the path you're cutting it cost me a little piece of my heart...

Rick Springfield - "Love Somebody"
from the album Hard To Hold (Original Soundtrack) (1984)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #5 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 12

Today's Song of the Day is by singer/actor Rick Springfield, who by 1984 was riding high on a double career as a soap opera star on General Hospital as Dr. Noah Drake as well as a pop star whose 1983 album Living In Oz spun off three more top-40 hits with "Affair Of The Heart", "Human Touch", and "Souls". The next year, Rick took a break from the show while he starred in the movie Hard To Hold, which was released in April of 1984. The soundtrack was almost a proper Springfield set in itself, as seven of the ten tracks were his. The first single released from it was "Love Somebody", another tsunami of power-pop written by the singer, and with a video ready to promote the movie to his throngs of fans on MTV...

"Love Somebody" became Rick's fifth top-10 single in May of 1984, while also reaching #13 on the rock radio chart. Internationally, while it made the top-40 in places like Canada and Germany, the song barely scraped the chart in England and Springfield's native Australia. So far, it's his last single to reach the American top-10.
