Songoftheday 7/14/13 - If you believe in the power of magic, I can change your mind...

The Alan Parsons Project - "Don't Answer Me"
from the album Ammonia Avenue (1984)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #15 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 8

Today's Song of the Day is by the progressive pop/rock (mostly) studio group the Alan Parsons Project, led by the namesake producer who helmed a lot of Pink Floyd's best work, along with a series of musicians loosely tied to the "project" and collaborator and main singer Eric Woolfson. In 1982 they had their biggest hit to date, "Eye In The Sky", which reached the top-10 on the US pop chart that year.

In 1984, the Project released two albums; the first, Ammonia Avenue, was preceded by a single ("You Don't Believe") that missed the top-40.  The second release that accompanied the album release was "Don't Answer Me", written by Parsons and Woolfson with the latter handling the vocals...

"Don't Answer Me" became the Project's fourth (and latest) single to make the top-20 in May of 1984, as well as doing the same on the rock radio chart. It did the best by climbing to #4 on the adult-contemporary (easy-listening) chart. In their native Britain, the single was a minor hit topping off at #58.

..and here's a rare live performance by the Project of the song, with Alan himself singing the part for the late Woolfson...

Up tomorrow: More prog-rockers with harmonies by the truckload.
