Pop Sweep: July 27, 2013...

It's time to kick off today's five-part "chart sweeps" sampling the songs making their way on to the charts at Billboard magazine, and as always I'll start with the "pop" side of the house....

On the "big chart", Billboard's Hot 100, Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" is proving itself to be the true "song of the summer" as it spends a sixth week at #1.

As Jay Z's Magna Carta Holy Grail is the top-selling album of the week (coming up on Sunday's "Album Sweep), seven of its tracks enter the chart with enough sales/streaming/airplay to make the list. Rocketing up at #8 is "Holy Grail" with Justin Timberlake. He was last in the top-10 as a lead artist (or a co-lead) in 2011 on "Ni**as in Paris" with Kanye West....(NSFW)

The second Jay Z debut (I keep typing the hyphen still) in the top-40 at #39 is his ode to the clothing designer "Tom Ford"...(NSFW)

Timberlake also gets a second entry on the chart at #47 with the first preview of the second part of his The 20/20 Experience project due in September. "Take Back The Night" has the disco smoothness missing in part one of his efforts...

Jay Z is in at #64 with "F*ckwithmeyouknowigotit" with overweight target practice Rick Ross....

Ingenue singer/songwriter Lana Del Rey arrives at #72 with a track originally released last June. "Summertime Sadness", with help from a remix by Cedric Gervais, becomes her third song to make the Hot 100. "Young And Beautiful" from the Great Gatsby revamp that went to #22, is still on the chart at #89 (up four spots)..

Jay Z pairs with his wife Beyonce' again at #81 for "Part Two (On The Run)", referencing their top-10 hit "Bonnie And Clyde '03" from 2003...

Appropriately hip-hop protege' Frank Ocean joins Jay Z at #83 with "Oceans"...(NSFW)

Newcomers the FiNatticz, on Ray J's "vanity label" Knockout (who the hell is giving Ray J a label?), debuts at #88 with "Don't Drop That Thun Thun!"...

We're back to Jay Z at #91 with "Picasso Baby"...(NSFW)

Swag-pop duo Karmin return at #98 with "Acapella". Last year they took "Brokenhearted" to #16...

The final entry on the big chart is Jay Z with lucky seven on "Crown"...(NSFW)

...and now on to the pop radio format charts...

On the Mainstream Top-40 pop panel, "Blurred Lines" commands the lead for a second week, while the aforementioned "Summertime Sadness" is the sole new entry at #36...

Meanwhile, on the older-skewing Adult Top-40 format, Justin Timberlake climbs to the top spot with "Mirrors"...

The top entry up at #29 is my "Pop Pick of the Week". It's the fourth single from Pink's album The Truth About Love, and "True Love" (featuring Lily (formerly Allen) Cooper) succeeds "Just Give Me A Reason" which finally falls from the top spot this week. (NSFW)

Virginia-based pop/rock band Parachute score their fifth Adult top-40 hit at #39 with "Can't Help". Two of them, "She Is Love" and "Something To Believe In", made it to #14...

The last song to come on to this chart at #40 is a worldwide hit from British folk singer Passenger (real name Mike Rosenberg) with "Let Her Go"...

Lastly, on the Adult Contemporary (or "easy-listening") chart, Pink's "Just Give Me A Reason" hangs on to #1 for a third non-consecutive week...

Jumping in at #21 is Elton John with the first single from his thirtieth solo album The Diving Board with "Home Again". Elton has the title of the most songs to make this chart with 69 (chuckle)...

..and coming in at #30 is traditional vocalist Josh Groban with his remake of the Stevie Wonder classic "I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever)"...

That's it for the start of today's musical journey, I'll return in 90 minutes with the latest on rock radio...
