"I Shot The Sheriff" - Warren G
from the album Take A Look Over Your Shoulder (1997)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #20 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 10

Today's song of the day comes from G-funk rapper/singer Warren G, who was landed a third top-40 pop hit in the fall of 1995 with an interpolation of the Tina Turner classic #1 hit "What's Love Got To Do With It". In 1997, Warren returned with yet another redo of a #1 hit, this time Eric Clapton's own cover of Bob Marley's "I Shot The Sheriff". This time only keeping the chorus, with his own rap verses in between, he again translated a song few young people of that time may have known about...

"I Shot The Sheriff" became Warren's fourth top-40 pop hit in April of 1997. The song climbed to #16 on Billboard magazine's R&B chart, while making it to #5 on their Rap Singles list. Internationally, the single spent two weeks at #1 in New Zealand, peaked at #2 in the UK, and reached the top-40 in Finland (#6), Australia (#8), Italy (#11), Sweden (#11), Ireland (#11), Switzerland (#12), Belgium (#16F/#31W), Austria (#18), Norway (#19), Germany (#27), and France (#30). The Take A Look Over Your Shoulder album just missed the top ten on the Billboard 200 sales chart at #11, while topping out at #4 on their R&B Albums list, going on to sell a half-million copies.
