"Say...If You Feel Alright" - Crystal Waters
from the albums NBA AT 50: A Musical Celebration (1996) and Crystal Waters (1997)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #40 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 1

Today's song of the day comes from dance music singer Crystal Waters, whose 1994 single "100% Pure Love" was a huge radio and club hit, and one of the biggest singles ever not to make the top ten, spending three quarters of a year in the top-40.  In 1996, Crystal sang on David Morales' Bad Yard Club's redo of their own club hit "In De Ghetto", which went to #20 on Billboard magazine's Dance Club Play chart and nearly made the big pop Hot 100 in America, "bubbling under" the list at #102. A year later, Crystal returned with a track on the sports tie-in album NBA AT 50: A Musical Celebration that would eventually be the lead single from her self-titled third album. "Say...If You Feel Alright", written by Crystal with producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, prominently sampled the Earth, Wind & Fire classic "September", and she climbed into the pop chart for another time...

"Say...If You Feel Alright" became Waters' third and so far last top-40 pop hit in April of 1997. The song also climbed to #52 on Billboard's R&B chart, while the remixes of the track helped it peak at #6 on their Dance Club Play list. Internationally, the single was a top-40 hit in New Zealand at #32, while just missing that level at #45 in the UK.

The second single from the album, "Just A Freak", appropriately featured NBA star Dennis Rodman. The song missed the pop chart (not even a movie tie-in with Rodman's Double Team could save it), but managed to get to #13 on the Dance Club Play tally. Shortly after, Waters left her label Mercury. In 2001 she released a one-off single on the dance music label Strictly Rhythm, "Come On Down", which was built on an interpolation of the classic TV game show theme for The Price Is Right, and the gheys loved it, sending the record to #1 on the Dance Club Play list. Two years later, she topped that chart again singing on "My Time" from Dutch (aka Jesse Houk aka The Scumfrog), which also reached the British top-40 at #22. In 2004, she collaborated with Italian DJ Alex Gaudino for "Destination Unknown", which didn't get much notice until two years later, when the track was remixed with another club song for "Destination Calabria", which was a huge European success, peaking at #4 in the UK and making the top ten in Belgium, Australia, France, the Czech Republic, Ireland, Hungary, Poland, Spain, and Sweden. That single even made the American dance chart at #8. Since then Crystal has sporadically been featured on many singles, going on to top Billboard's Dance Club Play chart five more times, including three with remixers Sted-E and Hybrid Heights, as well as one with Thunderpuss' Chris Cox and a great one, "Testify", with HiFi Sean. Her most recent big club hit, "United In Dance" with R-NALDO, got to #2 on the dance chart in 2019.

And here's the "Can You Feel It Club Mix" remixed by Waters herself with 95 North...

Up tomorrow: Singer/songwriter is inquiring about rodeos, perhaps.
