Songoftheday 5/2/20 - You mean the world and everything that I want for since I've been your girl, oh my whole life has been much better than ever before...

"Why I Love You So Much"/"Ain't Nobody" - Monica
from the albums Miss Thang (1995) and The Nutty Professor (Original Soundtrack) (1996)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #9 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 16

Today's song of the day comes from R&B singer Monica, whose debut album had already scored two top ten pop/#1 R&B hits with "Don't Take It Personal" as well as the two-for-one single "Before You Walk Out Of My Life" and "Like This and Like That". For her third commercial single release, Monica again put out a single that would have two songs promoted to radio, though this time one of the songs wasn't on her album. The lead track, "Why I Love You So Much", written and produced by Darryl Simmons, was a sweet midtempo love ballad that sounds neither too immature for her age or too stodgy to be fresh...

Meanwhile, the "B-side", "Ain't Nobody" was included in the soundtrack to the Eddie Murphy re-imagining of the Nutty Professor movie. Featuring Treach from the New Jersey rap trio Naughty By Nature, the song was written by the rapper with Dale Warren and producer Dallas Austin. Not relating to the songs by Chaka Khan or Faith Evans, Monica's "Ain't Nobody" was a harder groove but still smooth enough for the radio. It followed the success of the soundtrack's "Touch Me, Tease Me" by Case featuring Foxy Brown...

With both songs contributing to the single's "points" in Billboard magazine, the pair became Monica's third straight top ten pop hit in July of 1996. They also spent three weeks at #3 on their R&B chart as well. Internationally, "Why I Love You So Much" was a top-40 hit in New Zealand at #22.
