"Loungin'" - LL Cool J
from the album Mr. Smith (1995)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #3 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 23

Today's song of the day comes from rapper LL Cool J, whose Mr. Smith album had already scored two top ten pop/R&B hits with "Hey Lover" and "Doin' It". For the third release from the record, James Smith and the remix team of the Trackmasters transformed one of the other cuts on the album for radio play. The original of "Loungin'" on the album was built on a sample of Al. B Sure!'s 80s hit "Nite and Day"...

For the single remix, Trackmasters brought in the female vocal group Total, who had just scored three top-40 pop hits of their own, including the #12 "Kissing You", to provide back-up vocals to. (Terri & Monica did the same on the album version.) With a more uptempo sample, this time of Bernard Wright's top ten soul hit "Who Do Ya Love" from 1985, and the "Who Do Ya Luv" remix charmed urban and pop audiences...

"Loungin'" became the third top ten pop hit in America from Mr. Smith in August of 1996, by far the best showing of any of his albums. The song also rose to #4 on Billboard magazine's R&B chart, while spending four weeks at #1 on their Rap Singles list. Internationally, the single was his second top ten hit in the UK (after "I Need Love") at #7, and reached the top-40 in New Zealand (#11), the Netherlands (#11), Sweden (#12), Ireland (#19), and Germany (#32).
