Songoftheday 5/7/20 - Oh I need to know where we stand, do we share this special thing called love...
"Only You" - 112 featuring the Notorious B.I.G.
from the album 112 (1996)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #13 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 23
Today's song of the day comes from the R&B vocal group 112, who started out as the quintet Forte as high school-age friends in the Atlanta area in the early 1990s. Discovered by Sean Combs (Puff Daddy) and signed to his Bad Boy label as a four-some called 112 after the club they used to perform in, they released their first single "Only You" in the summer of 1996, two months ahead of their self-titled debut album. Featuring rapper Notorious B.I.G., the single caught the attention of urban radio, and then crossed over to mainstream stations as well courtesy of a remix of the song that added local rapper Mase to the mix. But the original hit first, riding on a sample of KC & The Sunshine Band's "I Get Lifted"...
"Only You" became 112's first top-40 pop hit in September of 1996. The song also spent a week at #3 on Billboard magazine's R&B chart as well. Internationally, the single was a minor hit Down Under in New Zealand (#43) and Australia (#53). The 112 album hit the top-40 of the American sales chart at #37, and went on to sell over two million copies and spin off two more top-40 pop hits.
