"I Can't Sleep Baby (If I)" - R. Kelly
from the album R. Kelly (1995)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #5 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 18

Today's song of the day comes from R. Kelly, who's self-titled album from 1995 had spun off two top ten pop hits with "You Remind Me Of Something" and "Down Low (Nobody Has To Know)". At the start of 1996, Kelly released "Thank God It's Friday" (his own composition, not to be confused with the disco classic) only in the UK (#14) and Australia/New Zealand (#60/#33). The third and final American single to come out would be "I Can't Sleep Baby (If I)". A breakup ballad written and produced by Kelly, it reminds one more like a Babyface song than one of his sexual excursions...

"I Can't Sleep Baby" became the third top five pop hit from R. Kelly in August of 1996. The song was his sixth #1 R&B hit (and third straight from the album) where it stayed for two weeks. Internationally, the single reached the top-40 in New Zealand (#14), the UK (#24), and Austria (#37).

Kelly also released the song in a special remix version that sported a more contemporary urban vibe to the production. A new video came along with the mix, which helped sales put the song into the top-5...

And here's Kelly appearing live on Letterman in 1996...
