"Before You Walk Out Of My Life" / "Like This and Like That" - Monica
from the album Miss Thang (1995)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #7 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 24

Today's song(s) of the day come from teen R&B newcomer Monica, who had come an inch from topping the pop chart with her first try, "Don't Take It Personal", in the summer of 1995. For the second release from the Miss Thang album, two cut were put on a single and both were promoted to radio, making it what the industry calls a "double-A" side. The first song, "Before You Walk Out Of My Life", was written by Andrea Martin with producers Soulshock and Carlin, and was more geared for the older market, with its break-up balladry backed by a very, very light new jack beat...

Meanwhile, the other song, "Like This & Like That", which featured a rap guest feature from Mr. Malik of the duo Illegal, had more of a Blige-like vibe written by producers Dallas Austin and Colin Wolfe, and urban stations grabbed on readily...

With Billboard magazine's chart rules combining airplay and sales from both songs on the single, which makes sense because you really can't tell why a "double-A" was bought for, the duo of songs reached the pop top ten in December of 1995. The single became Monica's second #1 R&B hit, staying there for two weeks. Internationally, where the two track were released separately, "Before You Walk..." went to #8 in New Zealand and #22 in the UK, while "Like This & Like That" peaked at #18 in New Zealand and #33 in the UK.
