Songoftheday 1/25/20 - He wakes up in the morning, does his teeth bite to eat and he's rolling...

"Ants Marching" - Dave Matthews Band
from the album Under The Table And Dreaming (1994)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: Ineligible to chart
Billboard Hot 100 Airplay peak: #21 (one week)
Weeks in the Hot 100 Airplay Top-40: 9

Today's song of the day comes from the rock act Dave Matthews Band, who had broke through to mainstream audiences with their radio hit from the summer of 1995, "What Would You Say". The second song promoted from the album to radio would be "Ants Marching", a chunky bit of funk rock about people fading into the vast machine of humanity and losing touch with oneselves. It was thoughtful, and it was catchy, and it had the violin prominently as a rock instrument, perfect for the time of Friends and all...

Like "What Would You Say", "Ants Marching" was not released as a commercial single in the U.S., and so wasn't able to chart on the official Billboard magazine Hot 100 pop tally. Nevertheless, the song had so much mainstream pop airplay that it stayed over two months on the radio portion of the chart in November of 1995. The song also reached #18 on both the Mainstream and Alternative rock radio charts in Billboard, while climbing to #25 on their Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") airplay list. Internationally, the song was their first hit in Canada, peaking at #30.

A third non-commerically released single promoted to radio, "Satellite", got enough airplay to go to #55 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart, while peaking at #18 on the Alternative Rock list and #36 on the Mainstream Rock tally.

In 2018, violinist Boyd Tinsley was fired from the band under nefarious circumstances (a sexual misconduct charge from a member of his sideband). To substitute in this concert they used an appearance by the Preservation Hall Jazz Band...

And lastly, last year at Rock At Rio...
