Songoftheday 1/21/20 - Late at night when all the world is sleeping I stay up and think of you...

"Dreaming Of You" - Selena
from the album Dreaming Of You (1995)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #22 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 13

Today's song of the day comes from the late "Queen of Tejano", Selena, who was on the cusp of reaching her dream of universal mainstream success when she was tragically murdered by a crazed fan and confidante in the spring of 1995. That fall, a cut from the album she was working on, "I Could Fall In Love", climbed into the top ten of the American pop airplay chart, though since it wasn't released as a commercial single, the song didn't appear on the official Hot 100 pop chart. The second song from the album promoted to radio, title cut "Dreaming Of You", was, and therefore before the singer's sole Hot 100 pop hit. A ballad written by Franne Golde and Tom Snow, the middle-of-the-road track was a personal pick of Selena's for the upcoming album...

"Dreaming Of You" reached the American Top-40 in November of 1995. The song also climbed to #9 on Billboard magazine's Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") radio chart. Internationally, the song also went to #30 in Canada. A third single released from the Dreaming Of You album, the mid-tempo adult pop of  "I'm Getting Used To You", made it to #23 on the Adult Contemporary list, but only "bubbled under" the pop Hot 100 at #107 (it got to #65 in Canada). Another song, "El Toro Relajo" ("The Partying Bull"), which was also in the Johnny Depp movie Don Juan Demarco, was a minor hit on the Latin Songs chart at #24. Meanwhile, the B-side of the "Dreaming Of You" single, "Techno Cumbia", was a big hit, peaking at #4 on the Latin Tracks list. And "Tu Solo Tu", released between "I Could Fall In Love" and "Dreaming Of You", went to go to #1 on that chart.

Two years after Selena's death, a movie based on her life starring Jennifer Lopez was released to critical and public acclaim. The soundtrack to the film, which collected odds and ends of her career, went to #7 on the albums sales chart and included both "Dreaming Of You" and "I Could Fall In Love". The first "Disco Medley" from the album went to #8 on the Latin Pop Airplay chart. Since then, there has been multiple compilations of her music, but nothing new and unreleased of note as yet.
