Robbed hit of the week 1/13/20 - Solo's "Heaven"
from the album Solo (1995)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #42
This week's "robbed hit" comes from the R&B vocal group Solo, who had come together in New York City in the mid-1990s. Attempting to cash in on the soul-acappella crazy starring the likes of Shai and All-4-One, the group released their debut single, "Heaven", to put in the mix in 1995. Produced by Janet Jackson's go-to's Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, the quartet of Robert Anderson, Darnell Chavis, Eunique Mack and Daniel Stokes proved their musical chops with an affinity for Sam Cooke...
While "Heaven" climbed all the way to #7 on Billboard's official R&B chart, the single stalled a couple notches under the pop top-40 in November of 1995. Internationally, the song did become a top-40 hit in the UK, peaking at #35. The second single from the album, "Where Do U Want Me To Put It", was also a big success in urban radio, racking up a second top ten R&B hit at #8, while stopping at the halfway mark on the Hot 100 at #50, and going to #45 in the UK. A third offering from the record, "He's Not Good Enough", peaked at #50 on the R&B list, while "bubbling under" the pop Hot 100 at #121. Still on Jam and Lewis' Perspective Records, the pair left the production to others, and the resulting second album 4 Bruthas & A Bass in 1998 did relatively worse, sending lead single "Touch Me" to #26 on the R&B chart at #59 on the pop hot 100. Both albums feature quality material, and especially the debut is worth seeking out.
