"Sentimental" - Deborah Cox
from the album Deborah Cox (1995)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #27 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 8

Today's song of the day comes from Canadian singer Deborah Cox, who grew up in Toronto before moving to Los Angeles to pursue a music career. Signed to Arista Records, the home of Whitney Houston, Cox released her self-titled debut album in 1995. The lead single was the adult R&B nugget "Sentimental", written by Cox with Colin Wolfe and producer Dallas Austin. The song featured Omar Epps in the music video for the sultry neo-soul song that helped get urban radio away from the glut of new jack swing that ruled the first half of the decade...

"Sentimental" became Cox's first top-40 pop hit in the U.S. in November of 1995. The song was a big success at urban stations, peaking at #4 on Billboard magazine's R&B chart, while the remixes of the song helped it rise to #33 on their Dance Club Play tally. Internationally, the single hit the top-40 in her native Canada (#33) and the UK (#34). Down Under the song was a minor hit in Australia (#49) and New Zealand (#46).
