Songoftheday 1/8/20 - I saw you as you walked across my room, you looked out the window you looked at the moon...
"Do You Sleep?" - Lisa Loeb & Nine Stories
from the album Tails (1995)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #18 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 12
Today's song of the day comes from singer/songwriter Lisa Loeb and her band Nine Stories, who had landed a #1 pop hit in American before she was even signed to a record deal with the song "Stay (I Missed You)" from the movie soundtrack to Reality Bites. Of course she eventually did get signed to Geffen Records, and naturally she included "Stay" on their debut album Tails, which landed her sole top 40 album in the U.S. (#30). The lead single on the release of the album would be "Do You Sleep?", a complex number that starts out with soft tones and rapid-fire chanting that evolves into a series of minor chords that have more in tune with grunge than a pop record...
"Do You Sleep?" became Loeb's second top-40 pop hit in November of 1995. The song climbed to #20 on Billboard magazine's Alternative Rock radio chart, while also ascending to #30 on their Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") format list. Internationally, the single was a big hit in Canada, peaking at #8, while also reaching the top-40 in Poland (#24) and Iceland (#26). In the UK, it just missed the top-40 at #45. A third single, the uptempo jangle-pop of "Waiting For Wednesday", managed to get to #36 on Billboard's new Adult Top-40 list in 1996, where "soft rock "stations came to please the rock-leaning oldsters.
