Songoftheday 1/11/20 - I have strong determination and I'm not afraid of change, I have yet to find that someone who would care to satisfy me...
"Who Can I Run To?" - Xscape
from the album Off The Hook (1995)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #8 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 14
Today's song of the day comes from the female R&B vocal group Xscape, who landed their third top-40 pop hit with the lead single from their sophomore album Off The Hook, "Feels So Good", in the summer of 1995. The quartet's follow-up single would be a remake of an obscure but well-loved "B-side" of a hit single for the Jones Girls. "Who Can I Run To" originally was released in 1979 as the "flip" side song of the single for the Jones Girls' first and biggest hit "You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else", which climbed to #5 on Billboard magazine's R&B chart and reaching the pop Top-40 at #36, as well as going to #12 on the Dance Chart...
The treatment of the remake by Xscape doesn't stray too far from the original, written by Frank Alstin, Richard Roebuck, and Charlies Simmons. Producer Jermaine Dupri adds some subtle touches to the prominent bassline that flows through the track...
"Who Can I Run To?" returned Xscape to the pop top ten in November of 1995, while scoring their third #1 R&B hit as well. Internationally, the single reached the top-40 in New Zealand (#23) and the UK (#31).
The group's third release from the Off The Hook album was the "Double A-side" single (both tracks got radio airplay) of "Do You Want To" and "Can't Hang", with the former reaching #9 on the R&B chart and #50 on the pop Hot 100, while the latter featuring rapper MC Lyte getting to #16 R&B and #56 on the pop list. While the single was inventive for each song featuring one of the prominent singers in the group, with Tiny Cottle handling "Do You Want To" and Kandi Burriss singing "Can't Hang", the split radio promotion may have stopped it from reaching the pop top-40. Meanwhile, the Off The Hook album was another million-seller, landing their second top-40 album at #23 (#3 on the R&B-specific list).
