Songoftheday 2/4/19 - I heard from a friend today and she said you were in town, suddenly the memories came back to me in my mind...
"Again" - Janet Jackson
from the album janet. and Poetic Justice (Original Soundtrack) (1993)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #1 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 22
Today's song of the day comes from Janet Jackson, whose luscious 1993 album janet had already seen lead single "That's The Way Love Goes" spend two months at #1 on the American pop chart, as well as follow-up "If" reach the top five. She even saw an album cut, "Where Are You Now", make it onto to the pop airplay top-40. The third physical single from the record would be a ballad that would feature in her starring movie role in Poetic Justice, acting beside rapper Tupac Shakur as a couple-in-the-making going through their own struggles in life as they travel to a hair convention. The song Janet contributed to the film, "Again", was a bittersweet song about going back to a lover who had treated you wrong, which mirrored the situation in the movie. But Janet treats it with much more emotion - the usual soul songs about that are usually angry or dismissive of the guy, but this is truly Janet being torn in the heart over this one. By the end, she's tearfully reserved of her feelings she just can't stop, something most of us (especially me) have been through. It would be released as a single after the first from the soundtrack, "Get It Up" from TLC, just missed the pop top-40 at #42..
"Again" became Janet's seventh #1 pop hit in the U.S. in December of 1993. The song also climbed to #7 on Billboard magazine's R&B chart, and scaled to #4 on their Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening" radio format list. Internationally, the song reached the top ten in Canada (#2), Sweden (#5), and the UK (#6). It also hit the top-40 in Ireland (#12), New Zealand (#13), Australia (#19), the Netherlands (#20), Switzerland (#20), Iceland (#26), Germany (#29), and Belgium (#31). "Again" would be nominated for both an Oscar and a Golden Globe, losing both to Bruce Springsteen's "Streets Of Philadelphia".
