Songoftheday 2/24/19 - She waits for me at night she waits for me in silence, she gives me all her tenderness and takes away my pain...

"All About Soul" - Billy Joel
from the album River Of Dreams (1993)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #29 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 9

Today's song of the day comes from Billy Joel, who returned to the pop top ten in the Fall of 1983 with "River Of Dreams". His following single would be the uptempo mainstream pop/rock track "All About Soul". Written by Joel, it's one of those types of songs that really just exist to celebrate other, better songs. And it would (so far) be his last big pop success in America...

"All About Soul" became Billy's 33rd top-40 pop hit in the U.S. in December of 1993. The song did much better on "easy listening" radio stations, peaking at #6 on Billboard magazine's Adult Contemporary format chart. Internationally, the single was a big hit in Canada hitting #9, while reaching the top-40 in New Zealand (#22), Iceland (#30), the UK (#32), and Australia (#34).

A third single released in America, "Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel)" only went to #77 on the American pop chart, but hit #18 on the Adult Contemporary list and, but make it to #27 in Canada. Meanwhile, overseas, the track "No Man's Land" was put out, missing any American charts but getting to #24 in New Zealand, and #50 in the UK. Billy released a third greatest hits set in 1997, and from it a cover of Bob Dylan's "To Make You Feel My Love" managed to reach the halfway mark on the pop Hot 100 (#50) and getting to #9 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart. Another remake from the set, "Hey Girl", got to #13 on that latter chart. Around that point, Joel announced he would be "retiring" from recording pop music, but continues to tour until this day.
