Songoftheday 2/21/19 - I'm sure I'm not being rude but it's just your attitude, it's tearing me apart it's ruining every day...

"Linger" - The Cranberries
from the album Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We? (1993)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #8 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 19

Today's song of the day comes from the Irish rock group the Cranberries, who got their start in the western city of Limerick in the late 1980's (as "The Cranberry Saw Us"). Dolores O'Riordan was hired on by siblings Noel and Mike Hogan along Fergal Lawler after they ditched their original lead singer, and after a local indie release they changed to the Cranberries. After a tumultous start, they signed up with Island Records, where they recorded their debut album Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We? with producer Stephen Street, at that point best known for his studio work with the British alternative rock band the Smiths. Released in the spring of 1993, the first single, "Dreams", was released the prior September, and while the single didn't get any traction in either their native Ireland or the UK, MTV started to play their video, which led to rock radio airplay, as well as "Dreams" reaching the Modern Rock format chart in Billboard magazine, eventually rising to #15. The second release, "Linger", was a new version of a older song Delores redid that got her into the band in the first place, With guitarist Noel helping the revamp. Originally coming out in the beginning of 1993, the track went to a paltry #74 for a week in the UK. But in America, where they were getting more attention, the track appeared on the Modern Rock chart in the fall, eventually scaling the list to #4 as again MTV help pop radio to get on board, as it entered the Billboard Hot 100, and became their first (and biggest) bona fide hit...

"Linger" became the Cranberries' first and biggest pop hit in America, reaching the top ten in February of 1994. Along with getting to #4 on the Modern Rock chart in Billboard, the song also climbed to #18 on the Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") radio list. Internationally, the track peaked at #4 in Canada; when the single was re-released due to its American success, it got to # in Ireland, #14 in the UK, #33 in Australia, and #38 in New Zealand. "Dreams" was also re-released, where it just missed the top-40 in the U.S. at #42, while making it to #9 in Ireland, #27 in both Canada and the UK, and #30 in Australia.
