"Ditty" - Paperboy
from the album The Nine Yards (1992)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #10 (three weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 25

Today's song of the day comes from rapper Paperboy, who grew up in California as Mitchell Johnson and settling down in Oakland. His debut album The Nine Yards was released in 1992 on Next Plateau records (original home of Salt N Pepa), and from it came his first single and biggest hit, "Ditty". Flowing over a sample of Roger and Zapp's "Do Wa Ditty (Blow That Thing)", which most likely provided the record's name as well, Paperboy throws a fast-paced set of Rhymes that name-checks both Jody Watley and BeBe & CeCe Winans. Producer Rhythm D provided a street-ready sound like the ones he did for Eazy-E...

"Ditty" became Paperboy's sole hit on the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart, reaching the top ten in April of 1993 and spending over seven months on the list. The song actually did better on the pop chart than on the urban-specific R&B list, where it peaked at #17. Internationally, the single was a minor hit in New Zealand (#48) and Germany (#93). A second single from The Whole Nine Yards, "Bumpin' (Adaptation of Humpin')", which sampled the Gap Band's "Humpin'", snuck in at #93 on the R&B chart, while "bubbling under" the pop Hot 100 at #120. By the time his second album City To City arrived in 1996, fans had moved on, leaving Paperboy a "one-hit wonder" with this still-fresh jam.

And lastly, a recent concert appearance from the rapper...
