Songoftheday 3/13/22 - But now I see you got an attitude and you're so confused, you didn't tell me 'bout your man at home so what you gonna do...

"One Night Stand" - J-Shin featuring LaTocha Scott of Xscape
from the album My Soul, My Life (2000)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #34 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 3

Today's song comes from R&B singer Jonathan Shinhoster, who records under the moniker J-Shin. A Florida native, J-Shin signed to the Miami label Slip-N-Slide Records, where he released his debut single "One Night Stand". The song was written by Shinhoster with LaTocha Scott of the vocal group Xscape, who had scored a pair of top ten pop hits in 1998 with "My Little Secret" and "The Arms Of The One Who Loves You". A year later, Xscape disbanded, but it wasn't publicized enough to have this song's label credit Scott with the "of Xscape" tag. She was the second member of the group to have a solo feature hit after Kandi Burriss. As for the song itself, its a messy back and forth between two people who had the titular fling and now she's preggers and saying its his, though she's already attached (and possibly married). As for LaTocha's retort, she's saying yeah, she cheated, but her man was mean to her, which he doesn't believe, and man, this is a messy record (though quite plausibly happening in real life). In all of this, LaTocha clearly outshines J-Shin vocally...

"One Night Stand" became J-Shin's first and only hit on Billboard magazine's pop Hot 100 chart, reaching the top-40 in February of 2000. The song also climbed to #8 on the R&B singles chart. J-Shin's debut album, My Soul, My Life, peaked at #71 on the Billboard 200 sales tally.

J-Shin's follow-up single, "Treat U Better",  didn't have Scott, and stalled down at #81 on Billboard's R&B chart, missing the Hot 100 entirely.

Leaving Slip-N-Slide to go truly indie, J-Shin got a brief notice in 2006 when his single "Sent Me An E-Mail" featuring auto-tune maestro T-Pain that sported a video featuring Tila Tequila when she was still a thing, took a week on the R&B chart at #98 (actually it's a better record than the one that actually made the top-40). Since then, he's released a dozen more records, most recently Red Light in 2021.

As for LaTocha, she was featured on rapper Trick Daddy's 2002 single "Thug Holiday", which went to #40 on Billboard's R&B chart and #87 on the Hot 100. She independently released an album Solo Flight 404 in 2003 that was pretty much unnoticed. Her latest single, "Full Time Love", came out in 2021.
