Songoftheday 3/20/22 -I think that it's time that I should just let you go, so I'll tell it to your face instead of tell it to you on the phone...

"Another Dumb Blonde" - Hoku
from the albums Snow Day (Original Soundtrack) and Hoku (both 2000)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #27 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 6

Today's song comes from pop singer Hoku (Ho Clements), the daughter of Hawaiian entertainment icon Don Ho. She had performed in her father's Honolulu shows since she was a child, and eventually moved to California to attend college and start her own music career, Signing with Geffen Records, Hoku's first song was a contribution to the comedy movie Snow Day starring Chris Elliott (who the kiddies now know from Schitt's Creek), Chevy Chase, and Jean Smart (who the new generation now knows from Hacks and Mare Of Easttown). "Another Dumb Blonde", written by producer Antonina Armato with Tim James, the diabetes-inducing pop song predates what would come from the Disney Channel later that decade, with inoffensively sassy lyrics aimed at the pre-teen crowd whose parents think Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson are too "adult". Unfortunately, while the song itself is crafted okay, her delivery is pretty much deadpan if tonally on pitch, and it's easy to see why this one is kind of forgotten today, much like the movie it came from...

"Another Dumb Blonde" became Hoku's first and only single to make Billboard magazine's pop Hot 100 chart, reaching the top-40 in April of 2000. Internationally. the single was a minor hit in New Zealand at #47. The Snow Day soundtrack, released in February of that year, and also contained teen-friendly acts like 98 Degrees, LFO, and Jordan Knight of New Kids on the Block, peaked at #183 on the Billboard 200 sales tally. Hoku's self-titled debut album, released in April as the single was cresting, did marginally better, spending three weeks on the Billboard 200 with a high of #151.

While Hoku didn't have another hit after that, she did get exposure in a big way with the opening track to the movie Legally Blonde the following year, with "Perfect Day". Since then, she has released two extended play albums (EPs), most recently Called By Name in 2019. In 2020, Hoku released a new single, "Greater".
