"There You Go" - P!nk
from the album Can't Take Me Home (2000)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #7 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 29

Today's song comes from Alecia Moore, who records under the moniker Pink (or "P!nk"). Growing up in the suburbs of Philadelphia in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Pink had joined a couple of female vocal groups before being swayed to go solo by producer L.A. Reid, signing with his LaFace label on Arista Records. At the start of the new millennium, she released her debut single "There You Go". Written by the singer with producers Kevin "She'kspere" Briggs and Kandi Burriss (the latter from the group Xscape), the song fit the turn of the century R&B crossover mold, with skittish beats and sassy attitude. It's quite clear from the start that she holds the upper hand, telling her man that's she's done, she's already got someone lined up, and she won't be fooled by his mind games. Most of the lyrics are delivered like they were rap verses, and the record was aimed primarily for the R&B market, to the point that even the single cover lighting cast her as racially ambiguous, drawing your eyes as well to her neon pink hair. Thankfully, the music video doesn't go that far, but a lot of stunt money was spent on this clip...

"There You Go" became P!nk's first hit, reaching the pop top ten in America in April of 2000. The song also climbed to #15 on Billboard magazine's R&B Singles chart, #2 on the Mainstream Top-40 radio list, and #4 at the dance-oriented Rhythmic format. The dance remixes of the track, mostly done by Kuwaiti-American DJ Hani, helped it rise to #8 on the Dance Club Play tally as well. Internationally, the single made the top ten in Australia (#2), Belgium (#3W/#22F), the UK (#6), Canada (#6), New Zealand (#6), Poland (#6), The Netherlands (#10), and Iceland (#10). The Can't Take Me Home album, released in April as the song was cresting, peaked at #26 on the Billboard 200, spending over a year on the list and selling over two million copies, while also making the R&B Albums chart at #23. Pink and the album will return to the series.
