Songoftheday 3/2/22 - I'm doing this tonight you're probably gonna start a fight, I know this can't be right hey baby come on...

 "Bye Bye Bye" - *NSYNC
from the album No Strings Attached (2000)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #4 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 22

Today's song comes from the "boyband" vocal group *NSYNC, whose eponymous debut album in 1998 had sold millions and spun off three big hits with "I Want You Back", "Tearin' Up My Heart", and the top ten single "God Must Have Spent A Little More Time On You". In the autumn of 1999, they paired up with Gloria Estefan for an even higher-charting pop hit from the movie Music Of The Heart, "Music Of My Heart", which came a notch from topping Billboard magazine's Hot 100. But during that time, the group was embroiled in a legal battle with their manager (and the late future felon) Louie Pearlman as well as their record company RCA for the former allegedly embezzling money from them and the latter to release them to sign with Jive Records. After months of lawsuits eventually culminated in them breaking free of Pearlman and RCA, JC Chasez, Justin Timberlake, Chris Kirkpatrick, Lance Bass, and Joey Fatone finally returned in 2000 with the lead single from their upcoming third studio album (there was a holiday set in there) No Strings Attached. "Bye Bye Bye" was written by the producers Kristan Lundin and Jake Schulze along with Andreas Carlsson. A change from their usual love ballads or broken-hearted dance tracks, this record was all sassy attitude, as they decry they're breaking up. Not leaving for someone else, no big reason other than they're not being treated right, this type of song usually is reserved for the women, so it was a headturner to see the boys getting down with the "wash that girl right out of my hair" groove. The music video was big budget to the extreme, with stunt-filled scenes featuring all five of the guys in three different chasing scenarios, along with a revolving dance set and that iconic choreography by Darrin Henson...

"Bye Bye Bye" became *NSYNC's third top ten hit on the Hot 100 in April of 2000. The song climbed to #19 on the older-skewing Adult Top-40 radio chart,  #25 on the Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") airplay list, and #2 on the Rhythmic format. Internationally, the single topped the charts in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and reached the top ten in Greece (#2), the UK (#3), Sweden (#3), Norway (#3), Germany (#4), the Netherlands (#4), Hungary (#4), Italy (#7), Spain (#7), Belgium (#7F/#21W), Switzerland (#7), Denmark (#7), Finland (#7), and Romania (#9). The No Strings Attached album, released in March of that year, topped the Billboard 200 sales tally for eight weeks, going on to sell over twelve million copies. At the Grammy Awards in 2001, "Bye Bye Bye" was nominated for Record Of The Year, losing to U2 for their "Beautiful Day", as well as Best Pop Duo/Group performance, which Steely Dan stole for "Cousin Dupree". The No Strings Attached album was also up for Best Pop Vocal Album, which also went to Steely Dan for the Two Against Nature set. Both *NSYNC and the album will return to the series.
